All yoga classes currently on our schedule are based on the physical exercises of hatha yoga, a vast subject which can be described as a holistic lifestyle comprised of physical exercise, moral precepts and other disciplines involving awareness of the body, breath, emotion and psyche.  At Dharma Studio, whether you’re doing Anusara®, Funyasa, Yin Yoga, Gentle-Stretchy, Yoga Works®, Yoga Nidra, Vinyasa, Pre-Natal or Baby & Me Yoga, all classes will involve hatha yoga.  To varying degrees, teachers will incorporate breath-awareness, philosophy and meditation in class, or focus on detailed physical alignment to increase strength and flexibility.  Some classes are strenuous and fast-paced, while others are gentle and slow.  Students are guided through a sequence of physical postures, emphasizing awareness of the breath by linking movements to its rhythm, allowing both the physical body and the mind to be calmed in the process.  We encourage you to speak with your teacher if you have questions or special concerns.  Below you’ll find a description of each approach.   To learn more about the teachers, click here.

Christy Nones and Jason Lawner teach Anusara®, a school of hatha yoga which unifies a life-affirming Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness with Universal Principles of Alignment.  Founded by John Friend in 1997, this popular style of yoga emphasizes that rather than trying to control the body and mind from the outside, the poses can originate internally, from our deeply creative and devotional core.  Each Anusara® instructor is personally trained and certified to teach by the founder himself.  The classes are safe, dynamic and challenging and the message is steeped in tradition. Natalie’s Funyasa is all about celebrating the joy of movement. Each class is designed as an uplifting tribute to the complete person: physical body, reactionary mind, luminous soul. Poses are linked playfully by the breath's rhythm, inviting joy into the practice with kinetic variations, all kinds of balancing poses, deep delicious stretches and more. Students make their own cathartic exploration of the body, through a sensual mélange of poses emphasizing sensation. Everyone finds their own way to move intuitively, intelligently through challenging sequences, staying true to principles of healthy alignment.  For more information, go to funyasa.com

Loree teach Slow Flow Yoga which begins with a long, slow warm-up and a mildly-challenging sequence of poses that flow seamlessly from one to another, and leads into a long, slow cool-down.  Throughout the class, the importance of safe physical alignment is stressed, as is the importance of detaching from the ego’s need to compare and control.  After the deeply relaxing savasana you’ll leave class feeling centered, with your body physically relaxed and your mind clear.

Natalie’s Yoga Nidra class is at once challenging and deeply relaxing. The entire practice is taught on the floor, exploring low-to-the-ground poses that require strength and build heat in the body without ever fully standing upright. The poses are sequenced to activate the chakras or energy centers in the body from the root to the crown.  Afterwards, through guided imagery and techniques of systematic release, students may arrive at a state of suspended consciousness, of profound physical and mental relaxation. Yoga Nidra literally means “the sleep of a yogi”, described as a state of mind between wakefulness and dreaming.  This style of guided relaxation has been found to alleviate tension, anxiety and symptoms post-traumatic stress.  It's said that half an hour of Yoga Nidra can replace three hours of sleep, and students can testify to this.

Loree and Kira teach the slow-paced Gentle Stretchy Yoga classes, which seem mild but are deeply effective and meditative. In these classes, poses are sequenced to create comfort in the body and mind.  Students stay close to the mat, often supporting the body with props to release tightness and restore energy without using excessive effort or fighting gravity.  Gentle Stretchy Yoga is appropriate for students of all levels from beginners to advanced, including athletes, people in search of stress-relief, seniors and anyone nursing injuries.  These classes are a nice complement to a rigorous, athletic practice, and a welcome antidote to the stress provoked by modern life.

The Yoga Lowdown: For most of this class, the work occurs on the floor, hence the name.   We stay close to the mat and search for physical sensation, locating pockets of resistance and asymmetries in the body, and release the tension that is trapped into the body by postural habits, injury and repetitive stress. Traditional poses are combined with modern techniques of physical therapy, and everyone is encouraged to explore personal and problematic tight-spots in the body.  By using foam rollers, we address deep myo-fascial tension and trigger release, focusing on yoga as therapy.   Because we rarely stand up, and since everyone is guided to work at their own pace and within their own comfort zone, this class is appropriate for all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners.

Gabriel's Skanda Yoga Class is a breath-inspired, alignment-based, power vinyasa practice, embodying techniques from many systems.  This style was founded by Miami local Ken von Roenn III, and is designed to celebrate the union of Shiva/Shakti, using the Maya Calendar to set an intention for each day, and each class. Using a both a scientific and heart-opening approach, Gabriel blends his years of academic and athletic discipline to create classes that challenge on many levels.

Loree, Ian, Joan, Vanessa and Benay all teach Vinyasa Yoga, but each of them leads the class in their own distinct style, balancing physical exertion with sensitivity.  Tough sequences are presented with great detail to alignment, retraining the muscular and skeletal systems to promote equilibrium and healing. It’s true that this style of yoga will help tone the body and improve agility, but the underlying message is one of self-acceptance and surrender.  By releasing the tension trapped in the body, you’ll experience a lightness of being and a clarity of mind that will leave you feeling strong, refreshed and relaxed.

Deborah O'Brien teaches Yin Yoga, a style which focuses on keeping the joints mobile by releasing blockages in connective tissue and fascia. Most popular styles of yoga, such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Power Yoga, are yang in nature, and emphasize strengthening muscle tissue while improving flexibility. Yin Yoga possesses a beautiful quality of stillness and silence, as the postures are held for an extended time, supported by blankets and props, allowing gravity and breath to do the work.  Each posture embodies the three principles of Yin Yoga: anatomical visualization, breath and self-inquiry.  Not only is Yin Yoga is a wonderful way to maintain the longevity of your yang practice, but is a great way for beginners to develop body and breath awareness.  Appropriate for all levels.

Karate class for kids, ages 7-12, with some exceptions (contact instructor for details)

In this karate class, Michael teaches kids the basics of self-defense, simultaneously helping them develop the mind, body & spirit. The techniques taught have a rich history spanning back many generations and nothing is modified in order to create a “kids” version.  Michael trains his students vigorously for 1 hour, twice a week. Each class consists of a vinyasa yoga based warm-up, rolling techniques for learning how to fall safely, hand and foot techniques taught in Japanese, and sequenced combinations for self-defense and motor-skill development.  Success in the martial arts depends on how much effort the student is willing to make in pushing beyond physical and psychological limitations. Parents can expect their children to be motivated to focus, work hard, and to develop coordination and maturity that will last a lifetime. Few sports are ambidextrous or offer foreign language education like Karate does, with the added bonus of self-defense knowledge. Give a gift that lasts beyond the next trend. Practice with a purpose.
