RUTH BLOCH

Born in Israel, the daughter of a musician and an artist, Ruth's mother passed away when Ruth was only nine years old. In Ruth's own words, "she was an artist and left all her tools. I picked them up and I know that sounds symbolic, but I felt I had to take care of my brother, my father and the art." As a young adult, Ruth left the kibbutz where she was raised and went to study painting at the Avny Art Institute in Tel Aviv. When her professors saw how accomplished she already was as a sculptor, they encouraged her to leave the institute and continue to develop her sculptural work independently. She lived for two years with her husband and children in the desert where her innate genius had an opportunity to flourish.

Ruth works in bronze in the traditional lost wax method. More recently, she has begun combining molded glass with her organic, tree-like bronze pieces. Her figurative pieces retain a fluidity and lightness, even in her larger bronze work. Her work is well recognized not only in Israel, but also in Europe and the U.S.
